DESCRIPTION:Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was first published in December 1843. 181 years later\, this ghostly tale of Christmas endures – and it is still relevant; it continues to remind us of the true meaning of the holiday season. For those not familiar with the story\, A Christmas Carol is the tale of the miserable and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge\, who has no regard for his fellow man. A visit from his late business partner\, Jacob Marley\, who is “dead as a doornail”\, leads to a series of visits from the Spirits of Christmas Past\, Present and Future\, in the hopes that Scrooge will change his ways. In addition to the ghostly apparitions\, the story is full of wonderful characters like Bob Cratchit\, Tiny Tim\, Scrooge’s nephew\, Fred\, and the Fezziwigs\, all who know that the joy of the season is to be found in their hearts and in sharing that joy with others. \nThis year’s production is an adaptation by Christopher Schario and features a cast of eleven actors taking on all the roles and sharing Dickens’ words in a simple setting but with all the magic that makes the story timeless. Bryan Thompson returns as miserly Ebenezer Scrooge to take us on this journey through his past\, present and future. The cast also features Kaytlin Dixon\, Luke Harlander\, Daniel Jackson\, Krysta Lee\, Matthew Martin\, Jeff Marks\, Addie Pittman\, Melissa Reese\, Eli Rowell\, and Danielle Thompson. \nBe a part of all the magic\, humor\, and warm sentiments of this immortal tale as Golden Isles Arts & Humanities presents A Christmas Carol. Performances will take place December 13-15 and 20-22. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 pm and Sundays are at 3 pm. In his first comedy for the stage\, the popular actor and screenwriter plays fast and loose with fact\, fame\, and fortune as these two geniuses muse on the century’s achievements and prospects\, as well as other fanciful topics\, with infectious dizziness. Bystanders\, including Picasso’s agent\, the bartender and his mistress\, Picasso’s date\, an elderly philosopher\, Charles Dabernow Schmendiman\, and an idiot inventor introduce additional flourishes of humor. The final surprise patron to join the merriment at the Lapin Agile is a charismatic dark-haired singer\, time-warped in from a later era.

The young wife (Joan Fontaine) must come to grips with the terrible secret of her handsome\, cold husband\, Maxim De Winter (Laurence Olivier) and deal with the jealous\, obsessed Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson)\, the housekeeper\, who will not accept her as the mistress of the house. A Gothic fairy-tale with suspense created by character more than actions\, Rebecca is the only film of Hitchcock’s to win the Best Picture Oscar. \nCinema Gourmet will offer five more screenings during the season: Walt Disney’s second animated and award winning feature\, Pinocchio on November 14; Blade Runner\, Ridley Scott’s dystopian futuristic thriller; Fences starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis on February 13; John Wayne and James Stewart in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance on March 13; and the film that made us all afraid to go swimming\, Jaws\, directed by Steven Spielberg on April 10. \nSeating is limited for the food\, talk and movie\, so audience members are encouraged to purchase their tickets early. Enjoy a celebration of swingin’ music that has inspired generations and crossed over into many musical genres. \nRenowned for the hard bop approach of his trumpet\, Joe Gransden’s voice has been compared to that of Chet Baker and Sinatra. Coming from a family full of musicians\, Joe’s introduction to music came early on through his father\, a gifted pianist. His grandfather was a trumpeter of merit\, playing professionally his whole life throughout New York. After high school\, Joe was on the road as a sideman with the big bands of Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. Eventually moving to New York City\, he performed with numerous groups\, including sub work with Toshiko Akiyoshi and Chico O’Farrill at the famous Birdland Jazz Club. Meanwhile\, Joe formed his own quartet\, which performed in Brooklyn each week and included the venerable guitarist Joe Cohn. “Having my own group and being fortunate enough to travel\, play\, and record has been a dream come true\,” says Joe. \nA widening schedule has found Joe performing 300+ gigs per year throughout the country at venues such as The Jazz Corner in Hilton Head\, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Jazz Club\, The Blue Note New York & Tehema Golf Club in California (where Joe plays events for Clint Eastwood). In 2016 Joe was honored to accept the Jazz Hero Award for his continuation to the Atlanta Jazz Scene and his dedication to students both through his teaching at Georgia State University and his yearly Jazz Camp for Kids. \nStep back in time with Songs of Sinatra & Friends with The Joe Gransden Quartet on Sunday\, October 13\, 2024 at 3:00 pm and their sound that is at once familiar but also fresh and vibrant\, appealing to music lovers of all ages.
