Cinema Gourmet presents Paper Moon

Cinema Gourmet, Golden Isles Arts & Humanities’ popular series pairing delicious food with classic films, wraps up its 2022-2023 season on Thursday April 13, 2023 with the charming and poignant comedy-drama Paper Moon, starring real life father and daughter, Ryan O’Neal and Tatum O’Neal.  The film’s screening and discussion are paired with the culinary delights of Chef Judah Lynch and Indigo Coastal Shanty. The evening’s events begin with delicious food at 6:30 p.m.

Released in 1973, Peter Bogdanovich’s Paper Moon is a classic period piece set in the Great Depression of the 1930s. Adapted from Joe David Brown’s novel ‘Addie Pray,’ it is the story of a pair of conmen—the orphaned child, Addie,  with a bag full of tricks and an experienced mysterious Moses Pray, who might possibly be her father—who go on a road trip of deception and mischievous adventures.  It is a skillful combination of comedy and drama that uses the period and the mid-Western setting as a background for understanding and appreciating the characters, who are strikingly real with individual motivations and impulses. Both O’Neals are wonderful in the film, but Tatum O’Neal is the standout – at 9 years old, she became the youngest person to win Best Supporting Actress in a film, a record that still stands to this day.  But all the performers are good as is the script and the direction.  Bogdanovich’s incredible attention to detail both reflecting the period and the emotional journey that Addie and Moze takes, makes Paper Moon a must see film.

Seating is limited  for the food, talk and movie, so audience members are encouraged to purchase their tickets early. The deadline for buying tickets for Paper Moon  is midnight on Monday, April 10^th.  Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by phone with a credit card or in person at the Ritz Theatre, Tuesdays through Fridays 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.  Tickets may also be purchased securely online at www.goldenislesarts.org.  Tickets for the talk and movie only may be purchased at the door the night of the screening for $7.  The Ritz Theatre is located at 1530 Newcastle St. in downtown Brunswick.
