Cinema Gourmet: Coal Miner’s Daughter
March 14 @ 6:30 pm
Cinema Gourmet, Golden Isles Arts & Humanities’ popular series pairing delicious food with classic films, continues on Thursday, March 14, 2024 with Coal Miner’s Daughter, the fictionalized life of singer Loretta Lynn, a girl who rose from humble beginnings to become a country music star. The film’s screening and discussion are paired with the culinary delights of Chef Judah Lynch and Indigo Coastal Shanty. The evening’s events begin with delicious food at 6:30 p.m.
Raised in rural Kentucky poverty and married at the age of 13, Loretta Lynn (Sissy Spacek) begins writing and singing her own country songs in her early 20s. With the tireless help of her husband Oliver “Doolittle” Lynn (Tommy Lee Jones), Loretta rises from local honky-tonks and small-time record deals to national tours and hit singles, befriending her idol Patsy Cline (Beverly D’Angelo) and becoming a country music icon despite the toll stardom takes on her family and her marriage. Based on Loretta Lynn’s biography, the film was a huge success when released in 1980, garnering seven Academy Award nominations and winning Best Actress for Sissy Spacek’s portrayal of Lynn. Roger Ebert wrote that the film “has been made with great taste and style; it’s more intelligent and observant than movie biographies of singing stars used to be.”
Cinema Gourmet will wrap up the season with George Lucas’ coming of age tale, American Graffiti, on April 11.
