Ribbon Cutting for Queen Square
March 4, 2022 @ 4:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Signature Squares completed the full renovation of Queen Square NE quad in mid-October 2021 and then the holidays hit! We are excited to be having a ribbon cutting celebration for the community on Friday, March 4th (First Friday) at 4:30. This quadrant of Queen Square is south on Newcastle Street from Gloucester Street down in the 1300 block.
This historic square is quickly becoming a favorite of those who visit it. Kids love it because there is room to run around some. The landscape plantings are more open and it’s twice as large when compared to the “pocket” parks in the downtown core area (Jekyll and Machen Squares). At Christmas even Santa had his sleigh parked there for awhile! Everyone enjoyed seeing the huge Christmas tree during the holidays that was positioned on the brick pad still remaining from the “Brunswick Yacht Club” that used to occupy the adjacent building at 1312 Newcastle Street. In addition to the Celtic Cross, referred to as the “Oglethorpe Monument”, which is located in the center of the square, there is a tall substantial metal pole tucked near a large magnolia that used to be part of Brunswick’s trolley route! It’s another hidden gem of Brunswick’s history as a bustling port city. You can stand there and imagine what it might have been like with the trolley running, commerce at the canal marketplace in Queen Square NW and municipal business occurring in the stately brick Romanesque building with the tall clock tower known as Old City Hall.
